How to Change Your Name in Fortnite

How to Change Your Name in Fortnite

You can change your Fortnite name in about two minutes: log in on the Epic Games website, open Account Settings, edit your Display Name and save. The change is free, it applies across Fortnite on every platform linked to that Epic account, and you can only do it once every 14 days. This guide walks through each step, the console exception, and what to do when Epic rejects your new name. If you still need the name itself, start with our Fortnite name generator.

Step by Step: Change Your Fortnite Display Name

Step 1: Go to epicgames.com and sign in with the account you play Fortnite on.

Step 2: Hover over your account name in the top corner and choose Account to open your account settings.

Step 3: On the General tab you will see your current Display Name with an edit option. Click it.

Step 4: Type your new name, confirm it in the second field, tick the box acknowledging the 14-day rule, and save.

Step 5: Launch Fortnite. Your new display name appears in the lobby, in matches and on your friends’ lists right away.

The Console Exception (PlayStation and Xbox)

If you play on PlayStation or Xbox without a full Epic account, Fortnite may show your PSN name or Xbox gamertag instead of an Epic display name. In that case the name is changed in your console account settings, not on Epic’s site, and PlayStation and Xbox each have their own rules and possible fees after the first free change. Linking or upgrading to a full Epic account gives you one name that follows you across platforms. Nintendo Switch players use their Epic display name once the account is linked.

Fortnite Name Rules to Know Before You Save

Epic display names must be 3 to 16 characters. Only letters, numbers, spaces and a few punctuation marks such as underscores, dashes and dots are allowed; fancy fonts, small caps and symbol frames are rejected, which surprises players who copy decorated names from generator sites. Names also cannot be offensive, impersonate Epic staff or other players, or contain personal information. If your name is rejected, the error almost always means a blocked character, a banned word, bad length, or that the name is already taken by another Epic account.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to change my Fortnite name?

Nothing. Epic display name changes are free. You only pay if you are changing a PlayStation or Xbox gamertag under those platforms’ own pricing, which is separate from Fortnite.

Why do I have to wait 14 days to change my name again?

Epic locks display names for two weeks after every change to stop impersonation and confusion on friends lists. There is no way to skip the cooldown, so double-check spelling before you save.

My new name was rejected. What should I check?

Check the length (3 to 16 characters), remove any symbols or fancy fonts, make sure the name is not already taken, and avoid words Epic flags as offensive. A plain version of the same name usually goes through immediately.

Will changing my Epic name affect my V-Bucks or skins?

No. Your locker, V-Bucks, stats and friends list all stay on the same account. Only the display name changes. If anything looks missing after a rename, you probably signed in to a different Epic account, which is the most common panic after a name change.
